Iwalani Kaluhiokalani is the Founder of Smartbody Movement, a professional Authentic Pilates™ and GYROTONIC® Studio and United States Pilates Assocation ®Teacher Training Center in Brookline Village, Massachusetts.
Iwalani has practiced the Pilates Method since 1997. She is also a Pre-Trainer in GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®, which she has studied intensively since 2003. She is a Center Director for The United States Pilates Association™ (U.S.P.A®) where Smartbody Movement is a teacher-training center for Authentic Pilates™, the original New York based program of Classical Pilates. Iwalani is a Laban Movement Analysis CMA (certified movement analyst). She uses this method of observing and documenting movement patterns of the body as change over time. Her teaching style addresses process and comprehensive human movement in regard to its physiological function and expression.
Iwalani has certified through, and continued her body work education with U.S.P.A.®, SmartSpine™, Pilates workshops, GYROTONIC® International Headquarters, and the Laban Institute of Movement Studies. Her current repertoire is influenced by her long-term studies with many great teachers, most specifically Brett Howard, Pilates elder Mary Bowen, Gyrotonic founder Juliu Horvath, and Hilary Cartwright (Yoga for Dancers, Gyrotonic).
Iwalani’s education also includes a strong background and understanding of anatomy and biomechanics in the Visual Arts. She studied Figurative Painting at Bard College and Massachusetts College of Art and holds a BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art, where she graduated with distinction and departmental honors. Her creative expression in her artwork has been founded in the process of movement, performance and dance for many years.
